Sweet Potato vs. White Potato
It is important to note that sweet potatoes are different and not related to white potatoes. Regular white potatoes are part of the Solanaceae, or Nightshade family, while sweet potatoes are a part of the Convolvulaceae family (the Morning Glory is a plant cousin). For a horses, dogs, or even a person with digestion difficulties, white potatoes contain possible gut irritants such as alkaloids and leptin and should be avoided. Sweet potatoes, on the other hand, can help regulate and soothe the digestive tract as it contains almost twice as much fiber as white potatoes. Sweet potatoes are also much lower on the glycemic index, and some studies show that they may help modulate insulin metabolism.
