In South America, sweet potato has been valued for its health benefits for thousands of years. Sweet potato (which is different than the white potato) helps maintain health and longevity with its abundant nutrients, such as vitamins A and C, vitamin B6, magnesium, iron, potassium, calcium, and copper.

It is important to note that sweet potatoes are different and not related to white potatoes. Regular white potatoes are part of the Solanaceae, or Nightshade family, while sweet potatoes are a part of the Convolvulaceae family (the Morning Glory is a plant cousin). For a dog or even a person with digestion difficulties, white potatoes contain possible gut irritants such as alkaloids and leptin and should be avoided. Sweet potatoes, on the other hand, can help regulate and soothe the digestive tract as it contains almost twice as much fiber as white potatoes. Sweet potatoes are also much lower on the glycemic index, and some studies show that they may help modulate insulin metabolism.

I'm hoping this picture will work. What a challenge getting everyone together with four Collies (three with special needs). Left to Right: Laddie, Jill, Ellen and Trajan. Laddie and Jill are deaf and visually impaired. Ellen is deaf and totally blind. They were all born this way. I have been involved with special needs dogs, particularly Collies, for over 15 years. The Tri, Trajan, is a goofy, "normal" Collie boy.
